The clown figure in Toru Iwaya’s paintings.

Originally Toru started draw the harlequin (clown) with oil on canvas.
After embracing the art of mezzotint focusing primarily on the Noh series masks, Toru Iwaya created more than 50 mezzotints featuring clowns over his life work of 57 years.
While the Noh series are designed to invoke a sense of serenity the clown figure is created to involve a sense of fun.
The clown figure is seeing by most as the fun crazy person that makes the audience laugh, however, Toru likes to depict in his mezzotints also the state of sorrow and loneliness that happen once the "show is over" and the clown removes his makeup.
